RESUMO

Reconstructive spectrometers/spectral cameras have immense potential for portable applications in various fields, including environmental monitoring, biomedical research and diagnostics, and agriculture and food safety. However, the performance of these spectrometers/spectral cameras is severely limited by the operational bandwidth, spectral diversity, and angle sensitivity of the spectral modulation devices. In this work, we propose a compact spectrometer based on plasmonic metasurfaces that operate across the entire visible wavelength range, covering wavelengths from 400 to 750 nm. We experimentally demonstrate the effective spectral reconstruction achieved by the designed metasurface spectrometer, exhibiting angle tolerance to the incident light within the range of ± 12°. Our results highlight the potential for constructing broadband, large field-of-view hyperspectral cameras.

RESUMO

Polarization, one of the fundamental properties of light, is critical for certain imaging applications because it captures information from the scene that cannot directly be recorded by traditional intensity cameras. Currently, mainstream approaches for polarization imaging rely on strong dichroism of birefringent crystals or artificially fabricated structures that exhibit a high diattenuation typically exceeding 99%, which corresponds to a polarization extinction ratio (PER) >~100. This not only limits the transmission efficiency of light, but also makes them either offer narrow operational bandwidth or be non-responsive to the circular polarization. Here, we demonstrate a single-shot full-Stokes polarization camera incorporating a disordered metasurface array with weak dichroism. The diattenuation of the metasurface array is ~65%, which corresponds to a PER of ~2. Within the framework of compressed sensing, the proposed disordered metasurface array serves as an efficient sensing matrix. By incorporating a mask-aware reconstruction algorithm, the signal can be accurately recovered with a high probability. In our experiments, the proposed approach exhibits high-accuracy full-Stokes polarimetry and high-resolution real-time polarization imaging. Our demonstration highlights the potential of combining meta-optics with reconstruction algorithms as a promising approach for advanced imaging applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Pine wood nematode is a major plant quarantine object in the world. Trunk injection is an effective method for controlling pests that cause disease. To evaluate the ecological safety of trunk injection with emamectin benzoates in forests of Pinus massoniana, the community diversity and community composition of soil arthropods and flying insects (Hymenoptera) were studied at different stages of trunk injection. RESULTS: The dominant taxonomic groups of soil arthropods were Collembola (30.80%), Insecta (26.42%), and Arachnida (23.84%). The taxonomic groups of flying insects (Hymenoptera) were Ichneumonidae (48.94%), Formicidae (14.10%), and Braconidae (8.44%). Trunk injection with emamectin benzoate has no significant effect on the community diversity indices of total soil arthropods and flying insects (Hymenoptera). However, it has a significant effect on the community diversity indices of detritivores for soil arthropods. It changed the community composition of soil arthropods but did not impact the community composition of flying insects (Hymenoptera). Redundancy analysis of arthropod community structure and environmental variables showed that total potassium, residual of green leaf, and residual of litter leaf have a significant impact on the community structure of soil arthropods, and total phosphorus, total nitrogen, water content, organic matter, and total potassium have a significant impact on the community structure of flying insects (Hymenoptera). CONCLUSION: Trunk injection with emamectin benzoate is safe for the ecological environment. This study provides a new insight into the field for the prevention and control of pine wood nematode disease, which is of great significance to forest management and pest control. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

RESUMO

A unique bifocal compound eye visual system found in the now extinct trilobite, Dalmanitina socialis, may enable them to be sensitive to the light-field information and simultaneously perceive both close and distant objects in the environment. Here, inspired by the optical structure of their eyes, we demonstrate a nanophotonic light-field camera incorporating a spin-multiplexed bifocal metalens array capable of capturing high-resolution light-field images over a record depth-of-field ranging from centimeter to kilometer scale, simultaneously enabling macro and telephoto modes in a snapshot imaging. By leveraging a multi-scale convolutional neural network-based reconstruction algorithm, optical aberrations induced by the metalens are eliminated, thereby significantly relaxing the design and performance limitations on metasurface optics. The elegant integration of nanophotonic technology with computational photography achieved here is expected to aid development of future high-performance imaging systems.

RESUMO

Enrichment of heavy metals in urban soils has become a major regional environmental risk. At present, research on the soil heavy metals in cities lacks risk spatial correlation analyses between different heavy metals, and there is a relative lack of assessments of the ecological and health risks. We selected Wuxi, a typical developed city of eastern China, collected and tested the contents of heavy metals in the urban soils of Wuxi in May 2020. Combined with Pb isotope analysis, ecological and health risk assessment, we found that the high heavy metal concentrations in Wuxi are mainly located in the central and western regions, and that the changes in spatial fluctuation are relatively small. The Pb isotopes in the urban soils of Wuxi are distributed in areas, such as those are related to coal combustion, automobile exhaust and urban garbage, indicating that the heavy metals in the urban soils of Wuxi are affected by human activities such as coal combustion and automobile exhaust. The average value of the potential ecological risk index of soil heavy metal Cd is 80.3 (the threshold: 40), which represents a high-risk state. Whether adults or children, the risk of soil heavy metals via ingestion is much higher than that through skin exposure. High health risk values are present in the central area of Wuxi and decrease in a ring-shaped pattern, which is similar to the population distribution of Wuxi and greatly increases the potential risk from soil heavy metals, which should be given close attention. We should develop and use clean energy to replace petroleum fossil fuels, especially in densely populated areas. This study provides technical support for the prevention and control of urban heavy metal pollution.

RESUMO

With rapid development towards shrinking the size of traditional photonic systems such as cameras, spectrometers, displays and illumination systems, there is an urgent need for high performance and ultra-compact functional optical elements. The large footprint of traditional bulky optical elements, their monofunctional response and the inability for direct integration into nanophotonic devices have severely limited progress in this area. Metasurfaces, consisting of an array of subwavelength nanoscatterers with spatially varying geometries, have shown remarkable performance as ultrathin multifunctional optical elements. Here, based on an all-dielectric metasurface, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a spatial domain optical depolarizer capable of efficiently depolarizing linearly polarized light in the visible spectral band from 450 nm to 670 nm, with a degree of polarization of less than 10 %. Remarkably, it is capable of depolarizing light beam with a diameter down to several micrometers, about two orders of magnitude smaller than commercial liquid crystal depolarizers. Furthermore, the long response time, bulky footprint, tight optical alignment tolerance and large pixel size severely limit the performance and system integration of commercial depolarizers. We envision the metasurface depolarizer to find applications in next generation ultra-compact grating spectrometers and illumination systems.

RESUMO

Shrinking conventional optical systems to chip-scale dimensions will benefit custom applications in imaging, displaying, sensing, spectroscopy, and metrology. Towards this goal, metasurfaces-planar arrays of subwavelength electromagnetic structures that collectively mimic the functionality of thicker conventional optical elements-have been exploited at frequencies ranging from the microwave range up to the visible range. Here, we demonstrate high-performance metasurface optical components that operate at ultraviolet wavelengths, including wavelengths down to the record-short deep ultraviolet range, and perform representative wavefront shaping functions, namely, high-numerical-aperture lensing, accelerating beam generation, and hologram projection. The constituent nanostructured elements of the metasurfaces are formed of hafnium oxide-a loss-less, high-refractive-index dielectric material deposited using low-temperature atomic layer deposition and patterned using high-aspect-ratio Damascene lithography. This study opens the way towards low-form factor, multifunctional ultraviolet nanophotonic platforms based on flat optical components, enabling diverse applications including lithography, imaging, spectroscopy, and quantum information processing.

RESUMO

Exquisite polarization control using optical metasurfaces has attracted considerable attention thanks to their ability to manipulate multichannel independent wavefronts with subwavelength resolution. Here we present a new class of metasurface polarization optics, which enables imposition of two arbitrary and independent amplitude profiles on any pair of orthogonal states of polarization. The implementation method involves a polarization-dependent interference mechanism achieved by constructing a metasurface composed of an array of nanoscale birefringent waveplates. Based on this principle, we experimentally demonstrate chiral grayscale metasurface and chiral shadow rendering of structured light. These results illustrate a general approach interlinking amplitude profiles and orthogonal states of polarization and expands the scope of metasurface polarization shaping optics.

RESUMO

: Rangeland desertification is one of the most serious problems threatening the ecological environment and socio-economic development on the eastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau in China. To combat desertification and reduce its adverse effects, some strategies have been undertaken to stabilize the mobile sand dunes and restore the desertified land. In this study, rangeland desertification with a gradient degree of none, light, medium, severe and extreme was assessed, and short-term effectiveness of different treatments on stabilizing the shifting sand dunes was evaluated by monitoring selected vegetation and soil properties. Results showed that vegetation became thinner and sparser, and soil environment deteriorated significantly under desertification, leading to a poor and low diversity ecosystem. Applying a checkerboard protection strategy in which herb species were planted and using a shrub vegetation planting method without checkerboard protection on mobile dunes for five years, vegetation growth state and soil properties were improved. Soil particles were finer, vegetation restoration was more rapid, and soil nutrient improvement was more apparent at the lower locations of the sand dunes under the checkerboard protection planted with herbs, which performed slightly better in improving soil properties than the shrub planting method alone. A longer time period would be required for vegetation and soils on the sand dunes to be restored to sustain more intensive land use. These findings provide more insight into dune stabilization, allowing effective management in the ecological restoration of desertified rangeland.

RESUMO

The long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) micro-lens arrays, as one of the important components in wafer level thermal optics, have been applied for wavefront sensing, beam shaping, integral imaging, and other thermal optical applications. Recently, electromagnetic metasurfaces provide a promising platform for designing high-performance, lightweight and ultracompact optical elements. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a 60 × 60 transmissive type, polarization-independent LWIR micro-lens array based on all-silicon metasurfaces with a fill factor approaching 100%. Each single micro-metalens with a pitch of 100 µm and a focal length of 100 µm operating at λ = 10.6 µm, can focus the light to a spot with a full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 12.7 µm (~1.2λ) at the focal plane. Considering the fact of single-step photolithography and standard integrated circuit (IC) compatible fabrication processes, these metasurface-based micro-lens arrays may have great potentials in compact thermal imaging systems.

RESUMO

Optical polarization topology is a spatially varying polarization structure, which usually exists around the polarization singularity. In three-dimensional (3D) space, optical polarization topologies mainly contain two fundamental structures, Möbius strip and twisted ribbon, depending on the parity of half-twist number. These spectacular topologies have been widely found in the existence of electric fields from multi-beam interference. Here, we propose and numerically demonstrate that, depending on the photonic spin state of light, an ultrathin all-dielectric metasurface can achieve efficient generation and transformation of two arbitrary 3D polarization topologies. The spin-controlled, tightly-focused Poincaré beams generated by the metasurface exhibit topologically stable 3D polarization topologies around the waist of the focal point. The preparation of such optical polarization topologies may have potential applications in compact complex beam engineering, optical signal multiplexing and optical fabrication of microstructures with nontrivial topology.

RESUMO

Bending light along arbitrary curvatures is a captivating and popular notion, triggering unprecedented endeavors in achieving diffraction-free propagation along a curved path in free-space. Much effort has been devoted to achieving this goal in homogeneous space, which solely relies on the transverse acceleration of beam centroid exerted by a beam generator. Here, based on an all-dielectric metasurface, we experimentally report a synthetic strategy of encoding and multiplexing acceleration features on a freely propagating light beam, synergized with photonic spin states of light. Independent switching between two arbitrary visible accelerating light beams with distinct acceleration directions and caustic trajectories is achieved. This proof-of-concept recipe demonstrates the strength of the designed metasurface chip: subwavelength pixel size, independent control over light beam curvature, broadband operation in the visible, and ultrathin scalable planar architecture. Our results open up the possibility of creating ultracompact, high-pixel density, and flat-profile nanophotonic platforms for efficient generation and dynamical control of structured light beams.

RESUMO

Variable-focus lenses are essential elements of optical systems with extensive applications in microscopy, photography, and optical detection. However, conventional varifocal optical systems obtain a limited tunable capability at the expense of bulk size and slow speed. The metasurfaces are two-dimensional flat structures composed of subwavelength scatterers that exhibit the strong potential for developing ultrathin optics. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate an all-dielectric polarization-multiplexing metalens with the capability to selectively focus polarized light. The focal length can be controlled by altering the linear polarization state of the incident light. The metalens has focusing efficiencies higher than 72% and exhibits nearly diffraction-limited focusing at long-wavelength infrared frequency. In addition, it is easy to realize high throughput with low manufacturing cost due to the use of complementary metal oxide semiconductor-compatible processes. We envision that this type of polarization-dependent device may pave the way towards the development of compact, multifunctional, and tunable optics.

RESUMO

Conventional method to generate autofocusing Airy (AFA) beam involves the optical Fourier transform (FT) system, which has a fairly long working distance due to the focal length of FT lens, presence of spatial light modulator (SLM) and auxiliary total reflection mirrors. Here, we propose an extremely compact design to generate high-efficiency AFA beam at visible frequency by using metasurface which is composed of a single layer array of amorphous titanium dioxide (TiO2) elliptical nanofins sitting on the fused-silica substrate. Numerical simulations show that the designed structures are capable of precisely controlling the deflection of Airy beam and tuning the focal length of AFA beam. We further numerically demonstrate that the phase modulation of AFA beam could combine with the concept of vortex light field to produce vortical AFA beam. We anticipate that such device can be useful in the ultra-compact integrated optic system, biomedical nanosurgery and optical trapping applications.

RESUMO

Conventional metasurface reflector-arrays based on metallic resonant nanoantenna to control the wavefront of light for focusing always suffer from strong ohmic loss at optical frequencies. Here, we overcome this challenge by constructing a non-resonant, hybrid dielectric-metal configuration consisting of TiO2 nanofins associated with an Ag reflector substrate that provides a broadband response and high polarization conversion efficiency in the visible range. A reflective flat lens based on this configuration shows an excellent focusing performance with the spot size close to the diffraction limit. Furthermore, by employing the superimposed phase distribution design to manipulate the wavefront of the reflected light, various functionalities, such as multifocal and achromatic focusing, are demonstrated for the flat lenses. Such a reflective flat lens will find various applications in visible light imaging and sensing systems.
